Weekend Movie Watching
This weekend I stumbled on two very good films.
If you're in the post apocalyptic, zombie/vampire camp, then Stake Land is for you. It's a good, low budget horror flick, as violent and gory as you would expect from the genre. It has as its premise the typical end of the world scenario: and unknown, unnamed virus has wiped out most of the population and most survivors have turned into vampires. Very pissed off vampires. "Mister" as the main character is known is bent on ridding the planet of as many as he can. He takes under his wing, a young man whose family has been murdered by the vampires. As they make their way to the Eden 2 (in Canada, natch) there were some "safe" but rough and very crude settlements (you could not really call them "towns"), somewhat evocative of the old west, complete with saloons and prostitutes. Beware if you're squeamish but if you are a fan of this genre, this is an entertaining and fun (yes, I said fun) movie.
The Double Hour (La doppia ora) is an interesting and complex thriller with plenty of twists, a flirtation with the supernatural, romance, and maybe murder. A couple who meet at a speed dating session run into unexpected trouble at a romantic getaway in the country. You'll be guessing and hoping right up until the end any maybe afterwards. I certainly was.
Movies like this make me appreciate Netflix.
