I had coffee and a blueberry muffin.


Elizabeth had the French country breakfast.

We saw creative portalets out the window.


Then we drove around and saw this charming house, where I would love to live.

Crewel Geishas

Here is the geisha crewel picture I showed you below as a very ancient UFO. I can guarantee I did not pay $149.00 for it but I'm very glad to have the color picture so I can get an idea of how to finish it. As you know, i'm not good at improvising.

It's not like I've been completely idle. I made this jacket:

Then I uncovered these UFOs:

A Hamsa that needs embellishment and quilting.




A school house wall hanging that I began so long ago I'm embarrassed to tell you.

This might be the mother of all UFOs. This is from back in the 1970's when I was doing crewel embroidery (be gentle. I was young and new at it back then).



Fortunately for me I found this crewel yarn at the quilt show this weekend. This entire batch cost me $4.00. Maybe I can actually finish that picture, which will cost about $500 to frame...



This little quilt was an experiment. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. I'm not very good at experimentation. I'm glad the picture is fuzzy so that you can't really tell what is going on (or not going on) here.


Another useful purchase: wooden spools.

Rain in Atlanta

 

Not sure exactly where in Atlanta - downtown connector I think. It looks like this all over - flooding, standing water, several poor folks have died. It's very strange. I do not remember ever seeing anything like this in my life, and I've lived in Atlanta nearly 60 years.

Wisdom of the Fathers

The , Pirkei Avot,or Ethics of the Fathers, is a well known Jewish text containing teachings and sayings of of the Rabbis of the Mishnaic period of Judaism. Here is one that seems to speak to us quilters:

You are not required to finish the task, but neither are you allowed to desist from it completely.

Pirke Avot, 2:16

Shana Tova

We celebrated Rosh Hashanah at the Atlanta kollel this year, with Rabbi Freitag. I love his enthusaism and sense of humor. The Kollel is an Orthodox shul but they seem to be focused on the spiritual, on education and learning.

This year I am enrolling in the Kollel Institute, a three year program of Jewish studies. I think this will be my path to reconnecting with a Jewish community. Since we left our synagogue, we have not found another place to worship and be with other Jews. In my part of the world, unlike Baptist churches, there is not a temple on every corner. We must drive a minimum of 20 miles, which would be fine if we could find a place where we felt welcome and comfortable.

I'm excited about the Kollel Institute. Studies include Jewish history, mysticism, ritual, and of course, Torah. Three whole years of learning. I can't wait.

The best part is that my daughter wants to come with me. Even more reason to feel this is a good thing.
