The sisters met on Wednesdays at Gladys's house where she had her quilting frames set up on her back porch.  I quit working full time after my first daughter was born and Allison and I became regulars. A few years later Elizabeth came along. Two of my cousins had joined the group and it became an old fashioned sewing bee - quilting, sewing, embroidering - and lots of coffee and good things to eat and conversation. The gatherings continued until the sisters had to move from their homes of 50 or more years. They had lived in the neighborhood since the 1930's, and all but one sister built their homes there after they married. 

I have many very happy memories of those days and I'm happy to have this to pass on to my daughters to remember these good strong women.

July block

July CQ, still in progress but nearly done (I think). This is the Aunt Peggy block, Mom's youngest sister. Pictures are from the 1960's.

The rick rack in the upper left is from Malaysia. I found it on Etsy. Sorry about the picture quality. My good camera is broken & I haven't made it to the camera shop yet.

The bonnet stitch is one of the later TAST stitches. It was done on the seam in the upper right hand side.

CQJP Progress & TAST Stitch

This is the Cabled Chain stitch which you can see on right. I'm using it as a basket handle. Or, you can interpret that motif as an ice cream come, whichever you wish. This is block 6 of my CQJP project, dedicated to my Mom's youngest sister, Peggy Ann, for whom I am named (the "Ann" part). Today, Peggy is the last of the eleven children in my Mom's family still living. Sadly, she does not communicate with the family. But she was a fixture on Wednesdays at the quilting bee/sewing circle/coffee klatch, so she has a block in the quilt.
